Women in Tech: Empowering Future of Automation & Cybersecurity
Reza Abdolee

In recent years, there has been a growing awareness of the need to diversify the tech industry and encourage more women to pursue careers in traditionally male-dominated fields. Despite progress in some areas, however, the fields of control systems, automation, and cybersecurity remain largely male-dominated, with women making up only a small percentage of professionals in these fields. In this blog post, we'll explore the benefits of having more women in control systems, automation, and cybersecurity, and offer some tips and resources for women who are interested in pursuing these careers. As a female professional in a high-tech industry, wish that I knew some of these tips at an early stage of my career or even during my higher education.

Why Women Belong in Control Systems, Automation, and Cybersecurity

The fields of control systems, automation, and cybersecurity play a critical role in our modern world. From the manufacturing and oil and gas industries to the pharmaceutical and energy sectors, these technologies are essential to the functioning of our society. As these technologies become more complex and interconnected, the need for skilled professionals who can design, maintain, and secure them has only increased.

One of the key benefits of having more women in control system engineering, and cybersecurity is the diversity of perspectives and ideas they bring to the table. Studies have shown that diverse teams are more innovative and better able to solve complex problems than homogenous teams. By increasing the number of women in these fields, we can tap into a wider range of experiences, insights, and problem-solving strategies, which can ultimately lead to better outcomes.

Another important benefit of increasing the number of women in control system engineering and cybersecurity is the role models they can provide for future generations. When young girls see women succeeding in these fields, it can help break down gender stereotypes and inspire them to pursue their own interests in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). This can help create a pipeline of talented women who are prepared to fill the growing demand for skilled professionals in these fields.

Tips and Resources for Women Interested in Control System Engineering, and Cybersecurity

If you're a woman who is interested in pursuing a career in control systems, automation, or cybersecurity, there are many resources available to help you get started. Here are a few tips to help you on your journey:

  • Take advantage of educational opportunities: Many colleges and universities offer degree programs in these fields, as well as specialized certifications and training programs. Look for programs that have a strong track record of placing graduates in relevant positions and offer opportunities for hands-on learning and real-world experience.

Look for women who are already successful in these areas and reach out to them for advice or mentorship. Professional organizations, such as the Society of Women Engineers or Women in Cybersecurity, can also be a great source of networking and mentorship opportunities.
  • Develop your technical skills: Control systems, automation, and cybersecurity are highly technical fields, so it's important to develop a strong foundation in relevant technical skills. This may involve taking courses in programming, network security, or data analysis, or pursuing specialized certifications in areas such as automation or control systems engineering.
  • Build a strong professional network: Networking can be key to finding job opportunities and advancing in these fields. Attend industry conferences and events, join professional organizations, and connect with other professionals in your field on LinkedIn or other social media platforms.

  • Seek out internships or apprenticeships: Getting hands-on experience in these fields can be crucial to landing a job after graduation. Look for internships or apprenticeships at companies or organizations that work in control systems, automation, or cybersecurity. Even if the position isn't exactly what you're looking for, any experience in these fields can be valuable.
  • Build your soft skills: In addition to technical skills, it's important to develop strong communication, problem-solving, and leadership skills. These soft skills can set you apart from other candidates and help you succeed in your career. Look for opportunities to develop these skills, such as taking public speaking courses or participating in team-building exercises.
  • Don't be afraid to take risks: The tech industry is constantly changing, and there may be times when you need to take risks in order to stay ahead of the curve. Don't be afraid to try new things, whether it's learning a new programming language or taking on a leadership role. These experiences can help you grow both personally and professionally.
  • Find a supportive community: Pursuing a career in control systems, automation, or cybersecurity can be challenging, but it's important to find a supportive community of like-minded individuals who can offer encouragement and advice. Look for online communities or local meetups for women in tech or consider starting your own group.
  • Remember why you started: Finally, it's important to remember why you were drawn to these fields in the first place. Whether it's a desire to solve complex problems, a passion for technology, or a commitment to making the world a better place, keeping your motivation in mind can help you stay focused and driven as you pursue your career.

Women have a vital role to play in the fields of control systems, automation, and cybersecurity. By increasing the number of women in these fields, we can tap into a wider range of perspectives and ideas, inspire future generations of women to pursue careers in STEM, and ultimately create better outcomes for society as a whole. If you're a woman who is interested in pursuing a career in control systems, automation, or cybersecurity, remember to take advantage of educational opportunities, seek out mentors and role models, develop your technical and soft skills, and build a supportive community of like-minded individuals.
